Who would have thought that the third largest in gross revenue gaming area in the US would be in some place called Tunica.

Tunica County, Mississippi, is 30 miles south of Memphis Tennessee, which of course is barely in Tennessee itself. Tunica is just inside the north western border of Mississippi right on the Mississippi river. In fact, nearby West Memphis is in Arkansas (with less expensive hotels). Confused?

But on to Tunica. Ten years ago this area was among the poorest in the nation. But thanks to gaming, it is now building up. There is a new river park being constructed where you can actually have some interaction with the Mississippi river, which is currently lacking. 

A small part of the change evident due to gaming revenue is the new museum. Although smallish, it's jam packed with top notch displays of up to date professional quality -  and best of all, it's free.

If you're driving south to Tunica from Memphis, don't despair if Highway 61 looks like a 30 mile stop'n'go traffic light nightmare. That only lasts a few miles, then the roadside traffic clears. You'll then see billboard after billboard advertising the casinos ahead. You then wonder if you'll be seeing those for the next 20+ miles. However, the billboards also thin out considerably.

Once in Tunica, you'll be in slot machine heaven at any of the nine large hotel casinos complexes Grand, Gold Strike, Harrahs, Sheraton, Ballys, Fitzgeralds, Horseshoe, Hollywood and Sams Town.
